Jazz great Horace Silver departs his body

Jun 19, 2014 Jazz great Horace Silver departs his body

After I started working for Wall Street’s Irving Trust Company, out of college in 1985, I went to the Blue Note on a hot summer Saturday evening to experience jazz great Horace Silver, then around 56 years old.

Mr. Silver and his band wowed me, giving their all to their performance. At the end of the session, he mingled with the crowd near the backstage entrance. I told him how grateful I was to him, and mentioned that I had just moved from Boston. Mr. Silver said he’d like to be invited to play there. Was he speaking in understatement? Wouldn’t people be lining up to invite him to play at their music venues? Some videos of his performances are here.

Horace Silver recently passed away, at 85. He was born in Norwalk, Connecticut, just three towns down the road from where I grew up in Fairfield.

Deeply thanking and bowing to Horace Silver. Na Mu Myo Ho Ren Ge Kyo.
