Of Alcoholics Anonymous, Reinhold Niebuhr, and Kevin Bacon
My college political thought professor, the great James Vance Elliott, several times discussed theologian Reinhold Niebuhr and his neo-Augustinian thought.
Not until this week, did I learn that Niebuhr penned the Serenity Prayer, which is a mainstay of Alcoholics Anonymous, and which was featured in Slaughterhouse Five. Little did I realize when recommending hundreds of drunk driving defendants to AA meetings (or else meetings that do not address a higher power or Christianity, for those who prefer to avoid that) that there was some type of connection between that recommendation, Niebuhr, and my political thought professor.
Kevin Bacon lurks around the corner.
