Mark Shackeford has an interesting explanation for placing the white and black part of the t’ai chi symbol respectively in the left and right.

As I have said many times, criminal defense is battle and often war, and internal martial arts skills are very useful in that battle and on the way to calmness in the eye of the storm and victory. My focus in fighting for victory is to harmonize my client’s imbalanced situation.

None other than television’s Kung Fu underlines the foregoing approach to trial battle, through Master Kan: "Perceive the way of nature and no force of man can harm you. Do not meet a wave head on: avoid it. You do not have to stop force: it is easier to redirect it. Learn more ways to preserve rather than destroy. Avoid rather than check. Check rather than hurt. Hurt rather than maim. Maim rather than kill. For all life is precious nor can any be replaced."  (Emphasis added.)

Fortunately, Julian Chu, one of the world’s greatest t’ai chi teachers teaches every Sunday morning at the Li Ming Chinese school just a mile from my home. Through his own achievement, he underlines how taijiquan is more than slow relaxing movements, but — at least for me — is an essential way of life that makes otherwise huge problems deflatable and manageable; empowers and teaches its practitioners to develop, harness, and productively use the power of ch’i; and teaches us how to develop and helps make life the positive and wondrous experience that it should be. Taijiquan helps me better approach the zero limits that makes for all the more powerful and fulfilling life both personally and professionally.

Obtaining the benefits of taijiquan requires daily and correct practice and dedication. The net benefits are tremendous. As my teacher Julian Chu’s taijiquan teacher Ben Lo repeats again and again: "Relax and practice. Relax and practice."
